What works:
Arnold's performance. It is the heart and soul of the film. The T-800 is given surprisingly strong character development, and Arnold almost nails every second of it. The audience laughed and cheered a good amount of the time Arnold is onscreen. I wish the film would've solely focused on the T-800. Definitely the best part of the film.
Strong thematic subtext that is seldom fleshed out in other films in the series. Fatherhood, strong mothers, privacy, over reliance on technology are at play here. A decent portion of it is pulled off with some unexpected gravitas.
The new biotech virus designed by Skynet. It's what takes over John Connor. Finally a new model that makes a modicum of sense. Not the garbage villain that was seen in T3. Basically, it attacks the host on a cellular level while retaining memories and emotions. This allows the machine/human hybrid to successfully feign humanity that could fool even loved ones due to the memories and personal affectations remaining intact. Very cool, imo.
Fight sequences.
What needed work:
Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke were serviceable enough, but I wouldn't exactly call them standout performances.
CGI helicopter chase sequence in San Francisco
The whole ploy surrounding Genysis makes plenty of sense in today's world, and it would've worked in the hands of a better director. It's a mixed grab of half baked allegory in this film, though. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Again, along with Jurassic World, you can tell at moments the film required a more skillful director at the helm.
